We are a diverse community of learners.
We are gathered together from all over the world,
working together to be the best life-long learners we can be.
We laugh often; and share much of who we are, how we got
here and where we plan to go from here.
We then learn the skills to help us achieve our dreams for the future.
The Daily Schedule:
9:15-9:35 Morning Meeting This is an opportunity for each student on a rotational basis to become classroom leader for a day. Students use a structured format to welcome each other, share "life changing" events in their lives, write a friendly letter telling something about the day ahead, and having fun participating in an activity that builds a caring and trusting community.
9:35-10:10 Literacy We learn new vocabulary, learn how to take big words part and build new words and learn new vocabulary to enable ourselves to read more difficult materials. We learn to use English properly in writing and speaking. 10:00-10:30 Wednesdays only is Library alternate Thursdays is Ramsey Library Bookmobile
10:10-11:10 Writer's Workshop In writer's workshop we learn to write using several genre such as friendly letters, narratives, personal narratives, report writing, "how to's" or procedural writing, poetry and writing a response to literature.
11:10-12:00 Math St. Paul Schools use Everyday Math that is sometimes called Chicago Math. It is a spiraling curriculum that introduces and revisits math skills on regular basis. Each time the students revisit a previously learned skill it is more difficult and more involved. Each skill is a "real life" skill presented in a way that most students should be able to relate to it as being something people use in their jobs or for personal reasons. Second grade focuses on addition and subtraction of multiple digits with regrouping, simple fractions, time to five minutes on analogue clocks, counting and adding money to ten dollars, reading and using numbers up to ten thousand, measuring distances, weight and volume using appropriate tools, describing shapes by their attributes and solving number line or number grid puzzles.
12:00-12:15 Recess 12:15-12:35 Lunch
12:35-1:45 Reading Block with English Language Learner support Mini lesson followed by individual, small group and large group instruction at each student's individual level of reading and comprehension. 1:45 Read Aloud
Read Aloud is so the students may expand their literary and worldly knowledge and to expose them to literature they would probably not experience otherwise.
2:10-2:45 Specialist (Science or Physical Education)
3:35-3:40 Dismissal
3:40-5:40 Tuesdays and Thursdays After School Tutoring Program
for enrolled students only. Mondays only is S.A.L.T. classes for Somali students learning English.
Remember to spend at least thirty minutes every night on homework. Students have until Friday to turn in that week's homework. Students in After School tutoring programs should bring their homework with them to that program for help and assistance in completing the homework. I teach After School on Tuesdays and Thursdays for those second graders who attend for academic assistance in reading and math.
Home work packages are given out on Mondays or Tuesdays and are to be returned by Friday of that week. When homework is all complete, it should be checked by the adults at home and returned to school. Spend thirty minutes every night reading a book, practicing math skills or doing other learning experiences such as following recipes, playing board games or reading to a younger sibling.
Suggestions for math skills practice would be to use the deck of cards your student got for Name that number, or Number Top It (subtraction or addition). They may also use the dice they got or cards to play Get N Stuff, or The Trading Game (coins to $1.00).
