Welcome to first grade in Mrs. Hall's classroom!

First graders will be busy learning social skills and good work habits through Responsive Classroom. They'll be receiving two hours of reading instruction each day with Guided Reading, Read Alouds, Shared Reading and Independent Reading.  First graders will be taught reading within the Reader's Workshop framework and writing using Writer's Workshop.  Math will be taught using Everyday Math for an hour each day. The children's specialty classes will be science, social skills, and physical education. The ELL teacher, Ms. Heim, will be teaching collaboratively in the classroom for part of the day. Through the Reading Excellence Grant, our classroom was able to purchase a complete set of leveled books for Guided Reading instruction.  Our school has an excellent Book Room with thousands of  leveled reading books.

Mrs. Hall has been trained in Writer's Workshop and the Reading Institute through the St. Paul School District.  She has also taken a 2 year graduate course in emergent reading instruction at Hamline University, based on Reading Recovery methods.  She has recently been trained in Everyday Math Workshop taught by St. Paul Public Schools. She has a Master's Degree from the University of Minnesota.

First grade is an exciting time in a child's education. By the end of the year, they will be fluent readers and writers with good math skills. They will start learning good work habits that they can use for the rest of their academic life. First graders will make many friends and have had many fun learning activities and experiences. The first grade love of learning and school will hopefully last forever!
