| Mrs. Uzendoski's Class | | Welcome to first grade at Highwood Hills. I love teaching first
graders because there is never a dull minute. As a teacher, I
emphasize independence in my students. Because of this, I
implement a workshop framework throughout the day. Such a framework
includes a mini lesson, guided practice and then independent work.
Please look at our schedule to see when we have our math, reading and
writing workshops.
The transformation of first graders from September to June is
exciting. What a privilege to watch children become independent
readers! Most of them come in reading and writing a few words in the
fall and end up reading and writing a hundred words in June! In
math, children will be learning how to count many different ways (such
as by 2's, 5's and 10's), solving word problems and even learning a
little algebra! Another important focus in first grade is learning
social skills.
School-wide implementation of Responsive Classroom promotes such
essential skills. Children will practice how to independently solve
problems with their friends, practice self-control and practice the
"golden rule"-- treating others the way they want to be treated.
First grade--here we come!
