| Welcome to Kindergarten! My name is Mrs. Birchland and this is my second year teaching Kindergarten at Highwood Hills. I have been in the district for 9 years teaching grades K - 3. I have to admit that teaching Kindergarten is my favorite!:) I am so pleased to be working on a team with such talented teachers.
We begin Kindergarten by getting to know one another, learning and reviewing social skills, and creating classsroom expectations. It is important for us to bond as a classroom family to ensure a comfortable learning environment.
Kindergarten as a grade has changed tremendously in the past few years. Our learning is done through less play and more structured activites; however, we do still have fun. Not only will we learn the basics of letters and numbers, but it is our goal for all student to enter first grade reading and writing with confidence.
After we have established our rituals and routines, our schdule will change, but for now, this is how our day will go:
8:50 - 9:10 Arrival and breakfast in the cafeteria
9:10 - 9:30 Morning Meeting
9:30 - 10:15 Reader's Workshop
10:15-10:45 Math
10:45-10:55 Story Time
10:55-11:05 Bathroom Break
11:05-11:20 Outdoor Recess
11:25-11:55 Lunch
12:05-12:55 Specialist--Physical Education, Science, or Social Skills
1:00 - 1:30 Rest Time
1:30 - 2:00 Writer's Workshop
2:00 - 2:10 Bathroom Break
2:10 - 2:35 Developmental Play
2:35 - 3:15 Language Enrichment Activites
3:15 - 3:30 Get ready for Dismissal
3:30 - 3:37 Closing Meeting
3:37 Dismissal
