Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year.
We are a multi-talented group of diverse leaners bringing a wide range of experiences and cutures to our learning environment.
Everyday we start our school day with a whole group morning meeting. Here we welcome each other, share what is happening in our lives, play an interactive game and read the daily message. The morning meeting allows us to practice social skills and gives everyone a feeling of belonging.
Third graders will be working with Mrs. Stern for math instruction. The fourth graders will be working with myself. Math instruction is for 90 minutes daily. This allows time for interactive math games, calendar math, and most importantly children also participate in flexible groups based on their specific needs. This small group instruction is paramount to your child being a successful learner. We also have access to FASTT Math a computer program that helps children memorize basic facts.
During Reader's Workshop time, students read independently at their reading level, enjoying both fiction and non-fiction texts, writing thoughtful responses to literature, and participate in literacy stations. Students receive small group Guided Reading instruction at their reading level. During this time students learn the necessary skills to be a better reader.
Students participate in Writer's Workshop. Everyday students will spend about one hour working on various writing projects. Some of the writing projects will include Memoir, Literary Non-Fiction, Biography, as well as other genres.
Obviously students are expected to be respectful and well behaved. Children having trouble will be given time to reflect on their behavior. If problems reoccur you will be notified and your child maybe suspended or dismissed for the day.
Again welcome to an exciting and new school year. I am looking forward to working with you and your child. By working together your child will be very successful.
