There have been some big changes is how reading instruction is being delivered to students. In conjunction with the Saint Paul Public School's Center for Academic Excellence and best practices, Highwood Hills has made the shift to Reader's Workshop. This has means that primary classrooms are spending 120 minutes of uninterrupted reading each and everyday. The intermediate grades have 60 minutes, although many teachers have already added more time to that. Research shows that students make greater gains when there are larger blocks of time exclusively dedicated to reading than when the minutes were broken up over the course of the day. Lost time from transitions has been nearly eliminated because most students stay in their classrooms for the entire block. Students continue to have instruction at their individual levels.
