Dear Reader,

Highwood Hills Elementary School is located at the corner of McKnight Avenue and Londin Lane on the east side of St. Paul. One of forty-eight elementary schools in the St. Paul system, Highwood houses 450 diverse students in grades PreK-6. There is a total staff of 100 with 70 professionals teaching positions.

Highwood Hills is very proactive in trying to meet its commitment to providing a quality education for our students. The diversity of the student body includes seventeen languages spoken as the primary language by the students. This creates a learning need that dictates heavy emphasis on ELL staff that serves the needs created by this subgroup of the school. In addition, the school is involved in several initiatives that provide the overall staff with many training opportunities designed to prepare them to teach to the needs of the student body. Staff works in an integrated manner with other professionals, both at their grade level and in the specialist areas, to ensure that all is being done that is possible to provide unique and appropriate learning opportunities for the students.

The staff and parents work closely together, believing that a close relationship between the home and the school better serves the students learning. There is an active site council and PTA that look for ways to support the schools efforts. This results in communication opportunities for both the staff and parents. The result is that staff sees the parents as a crucial and important link in helping the students to achieve. The parents see the school as a partner in helping them support the efforts of their children. The result is the creation of learning environment that is warm, supportive, and encouraging of the students total development.

Highwood Hills is always interested in exploring ways to improve learning for the students. Parent input, staff training, cooperation between staff member and between the staff and principal has created a caring atmosphere that encourages exploration, questioning, and creative problem solving by all who are involved in the school.

Students learning is what we are all about. All that we do is driven by this fact. Please consider joining us in what is turning out to be an exciting adventure.

Sincerely yours,

Patricia L. Rosenbaum,

Principal
